WIDGET - INJECTION MOULDING PROJECT

Branding

LeBron James is a professional basketball player for the LA Lakers, who also runs a shoe brand with Nike.

The widget would be given away as a promotional item for the brand. Athletes can hang their shoes on the outside of their bag, to let them dry and cool after an event. The body of the widget incorporates the LeBron James logo, where the shoelaces can hang over each end.

Prototype

The widget was created in Solidworks and is made from 2 parts. A 3D printed prototype was produced to test the fitment of the 2 parts.

Testing

The Solidworks model was inverse processed with HSM Works for machining of mould tools on CNC XYZ milling machine. Simulation for cavity filling and the design’s 2-part clip required inserts and pins on the mould tool. Design was machined and tested in modeling foam before final tool machining in aluminium

Machining

The two halves of the mould tool were machined in aluminium and inserts/pins were manufactured from steel. Once completed the mould tool was successful in making the plastic widgets. These were then tested holding shoes on users’ backpacks.
